HIGH HUT
High Hut is perched on a ridge top at 4,760 feet, offering a spectacular 360° view of Mount Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens. High Hut is the oldest, highest, smallest and possibly most rustic of the MTTA structures. This is a strenuous hike on a sustained moderate to steep grade trail.
How far is it to High Hut?
From the main trail/road, High Hut is approximately 3.0 miles with 1,800’ of elevation gain from the upper sno-park and 4.0 miles with 2,400’ of elevation gain from the lower sno-park.
What is in High Hut?
Sleeping Arrangements: Communal sleeping for 8 in the sleeping loft and main room. Standard size and backpacking pillows are provided. There are also some cloth pillow cases, but feel free to bring you own.
Kitchen:
- Cook stove and oven (Propane)
- Pots, sauce pans, frying pans, bakeware, mixing bowls, measuring cups, cooking utensils, plates, bowls, cups, silverware, knives, and cutting boards
- Coffee Preparation:
- Drip with paper filters provided
- Percolator
- French press
- Food Items: salt & pepper, sugar, cooking oil and spray, coffee, coffee creamer, tea, some spices, paper towels.
- Note: Please do not leave perishable food or nearly empty containers of food products like syrup. Food products that list “Refrigerate after opening” should not be left in the communal food supply.
- Cleaning supplies – dish soap, hand soap, Clorox, etc.
- Dish towels and kitchen cloths
- Toilet paper
Water Filter System: Rain water is collected in the summer. In the winter, water comes from snow melt. There is a water filter system to provide clean drinking water.
Other Items: Some other amenities you will find:
- Propane fireplace
- Solar powered lighting
- Battery lanterns available if the solar power loses charge
- First Aid Kit
- Large dining table
- Games (cards, board games, etc.)
- Books/Magazines
Restrooms: An outhouse are located outside of the hut.

Things to do Nearby
After the hike out here, you might just want to rest and enjoy the great views of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams. Curl up by the warm stove and enjoy a cup of coffee. If you are feeling more adventurous, head back out for a visit to Snow Bowl (3.0 miles) or the nearby forest trail for shorter loop hike.
